George


George Laws is a mental health clinician with a private practice in Boulder, Colorado. He travels to other locations and provides online counselling through his telehealth clinic.

George Laws is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, a Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner and EMDR Practitioner. George provides direct therapeutic and educational services to individuals, couples, families, groups, and communities. George specializes in assisting others in their understanding and healing of trauma, developmental neglect, and distressful mental conditioning with the intention of increasing resiliency and coherency physically, emotionally, mentally, and socially. 

George gained his Social Work education at the University of Tasmania, Australia in 1980.  His thesis, Parental Power, Parental Control, and Child Compliance," focused on the dynamics of family power, interpersonal relationships, and personal growth.

George was the manager of a multi-purpose family welfare agency in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia and later, at Gold Coast City, Queensland, Australia. His administrative and clinical social work skills were demonstrated in psychotherapy, marriage and family therapy, adoption (all facets), fostering, migrant welfare, family day care, and family education programs.  George was responsible for the administration of these programs and the supervision of staff, counselors, and volunteers.

He designed and taught a federally approved Marriage/Family Counselor Training Course, gaining government funding to install family therapy rooms with in-house video and audio processing.  He was a founding member of the Gold Coast Marriage and Family Therapy Association in Queensland, Australia.  George was the Program Administrator for the Big Brothers of the Gold Coast where he expanded services to include a Big Sisters Program. 

In clinical practice, since 1980, George has worked with children, adults, couples, families, groups and communities dealing with fostering, adoption, refugee settlement, marital reconciliation, marital separation, divorce, abuse, family conflict, child custody, grief, rage, illness, PTSD, and social trauma.

As both a Group Facilitator and Educator, George has presented parenting skills education programs for a wide spectrum of parents. He has presented such certified courses as: "Building Healing Relationships" and "Rebuilding: When Your Relationship Ends" seminars in conjunction with his friend and colleague, the late, Dr. Bruce Fisher, of the Family Relations Learning Center. He taught “Couple Communication" Courses with Interpersonal Communications Inc.; and "Parent Effectiveness Training" and "Youth Effectiveness Training" by Effectiveness Training Inc.  He has taught psycho-educational programs in personal and relationship development for professional staff trainings, caregivers, and special client groups.  As well, George has facilitated men in Fathers' Groups.

His areas of study and training include Developmental Psychology, Experiential Psychology, Transactional-Analysis, Gestalt Therapy, Psychodrama, Art and Play Therapy, Strategic Family Therapy, Systemic Family Therapy, Structural Family Therapy, Grief Counseling, Focusing, Somatic Experiencing, Boulder Sheriff’s Dept.  Victim's Advocacy Program, Colorado Judicial Branch – Child and Family Investigator Training, Voice Instruction Training, Sound Healing Therapy, (DBT) Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Oceanic Body Work, Yoga, Ayurvedic Medicine, Eastern Psychotherapy, and (EMDR) Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.

George integrates these therapeutic approaches with somatic psychotherapy into his clinical practice specializing in trauma renegotiation and resolution of psycho-social pathologies. 

Since meeting Dr. Peter Levine in 1997, George has been practicing and integrating Somatic Experiencing® within his personal and professional lifestyle. George was personally trained by Dr. Levine and is a Certified Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner.  He later became the Resource Administrator for the Foundation for Human Enrichment, which was founded by Dr. Levine for teaching his methods. Previously, George assisted Peter Levine in the development of a Video Library of Dr. Levine's personal client sessions and Somatic Experiencing® Trainings for the Foundation's Seminars.  

George has worked with and taught the indigenous of Canada regarding healing Residential School Trauma issues in Canada. He also assisted Dr. Judy Anderson at the Southern Cross University in Lismore, New South Wales, to assist Australian aborigines suffering from the traumatic effects of the Stolen Generations trauma issues in New South Wales, Australia.

George provides a wide array of assistance with many years of experience through his clinical social work services within personal sessions, couple sessions, family sessions, group education/facilitation, and community work.
