When a person loses something or someone valuable to them, feelings of grief can be overbearing. Grief can leave a person feeling sad, hopeless, isolated, irritable, and numb by affecting them mentally, emotionally, and physically. It is important to understand that healing from grief is a process and everyone navigates this emotion differently.
Many people do not know what to say or do when a person is grieving, yet it is important to allow patience with the individual suffering (including yourself) throughout the entire process. Patience is making power slowly; be gentle and caring for the process.
An alternative treatment method includes psychotherapy. Through psychotherapy, a patient may:
- Improve their understanding of life, death, and self-caring skills
- Reduce feelings of blame and guilt
- Explore and process emotions
- Allow a forgiveness of oneself, the other and the event.
Consider seeking professional support if feelings of grief do not ease over time. Loss has varying degrees of traumatic stress and pain which can accumulate over a lifetime. Know that you are worthy of understanding and healing from within.
